Here in New England, we may not have as many hot, humid days as the folks down South, but we do like to stay comfortable. A properly running, efficient air conditioning system is a welcome relief on the days we do need it. There’s nothing worse than turning on your AC for the first time and finding that it doesn’t work. A few preventive measures on your part and you could reduce your chances of that ever happening to you.
Here are some basic tips:
* The first thing to check before turning on your AC is to make the sure condensing unit located outside is not covered or blocked. The unit needs to draw air into the system to cool and blow inside. The process is hindered if it cannot pull enough air from outside. Clean obvious obstructions such as trash, leaves, etc. from around the exterior of the unit.
* Run your AC for a few minutes now – before you need it. If you wait until the first hot day to discover it isn’t working, it’s possible you may be waiting quite a while for the busy AC specialist to get to your house for repairs.
* Change disposable filters or clean electrostatic or electronic filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow, reducing efficiency and creating the possibility of the evaporator icing up.
* Make sure the thermostat is set in the cooling mode. Merely setting the dial below room temperature will not activate the air conditioning if it is set in heat mode.
* Have a professional service the unit annually.
